Phillip Cargile has been a Research Scientist at Harvard University since 2017 and is based at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian. He is a member of the Conroy research group and a co-founder and executive committee member of AstroAI, a group that brings experts in artificial intelligence together with scientists to tackle ambitious problems in astrophysics.
His earlier research focused on young stars, open clusters, and the reliability of stellar age-measurement techniques. His current research connects stellar physics with modern astronomical surveys. He develops computational models for measuring stellar properties. He leads data processing for the forthcoming Via Survey.
Cargile earned dual bachelor’s degrees in Astronomy and Physics from the University of Texas at Austin in 2004. He subsequently received an M.S. in Physics in 2008 and a Ph.D. in Physics in 2010 from Vanderbilt University. His doctoral research examined the accuracy of stellar-evolution models in determining the ages of young stars in open clusters.
