Honored Guest and Speaker:

Professor Martin Puchner

Prof. Puchner, the the Byron and Anita Wien Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Harvard, is a prize-winning author, educator, public speaker, and institution builder in the arts and humanities. His writings, which include a dozen books and anthologies and over seventy articles and essays, range from philosophy and theater to world literature and have been translated into many languages. Through his best-selling "Norton Anthology of World Literature" and his HarvardX MOOC "Masterpieces of World Literature", he has brought four thousand years of literature to audiences across the globe.

His best selling book, "The Written World:  The Power of Stories to Shape People, History, and Civilization," tells the story of lliterature from the invention of writing to the Internet.  His book, "The Language of Thieves," is an adventurous foray into the philosophy of language and a reckoning with Germany's past. His 2022 book, "Literature for a Changing Planet" draws vital lessons from four thousand years of world literature to show how humanity has put ourselves on the path of global climate change―and how we might change paths before it’s too late.

We are pleased that this year’s Annual Dinner will be held at the Basking Ridge Country Club in an outdoor tent.  The cocktail hour will start at 6:00 pm and the guest lecture will start at 7:00 pm.  All attendees will be required to be vaccinated or demonstrate a negative COVID test.

The Annual Dinner is HCNJ’s primary fundraising event of the year. We hope you can contribute to the HCNJ Winternship Program when you RSVP. Our unique Winternship Program provides $1,500 stipends to students who work for New Jersey non-profit organizations during J-Term, the one-month period between Harvard’s fall and spring semesters. The program is extremely popular with students as  it gives them an opportunity to explore potential careers while giving back to their communities. The Club is proud to have supported eight Winternships this past January and we hope you can give generously to this worthwhile program.

Annual dinner ticket prices are $85 for HCNJ members, incoming freshmen or their parents, and $90 for non-members.
