If you enjoyed the Club's outing two years ago to see a live performance of Raiders of the Lost Ark, you'll love this year's performance of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. The matinee performance will entail a showing of the movie with a live orchestra providing the score. Empire Strikes Back is the perfect unity of an excellent sequel and a superb score. Empire is one of the few sequels that actually stands up better than the original (in the same vein as The Godfather, Part II). The score, likewise, was a reprise composition by the legendary John Williams that also bested the original. Except for the main title card and end credits, Williams composed an entirely new set of background music with some of the most recognizable leitmotifs in history. Rather than relying on the eerie scores than films set in space has relied upon in the late 60s and the 70s, Williams tooked a page from Strauss and the late romantics in composing wonderous themes and epic fanfares. Who can resist of thinking of Dark Vader's steely black outfit when hearing the sound of the imperial march? For further argument, check out this excellent video on why the score is one of the greatest in history:
