"Our garden is an ongoing labor of love. We retained the old yews, rhododendrons, and mature trees on our half acre, but everything else has been the result of seventeen years of addition and subtraction. In keeping with this philosophy, we have recently added more deer and rodent resistant perennials to the front garden borders. We have also introduced more small shrubs for year-round interest and to reduce maintenance. The backyard garden is divided into many different areas of interest. A path through a partly shaded perennial garden leads under an arch festooned with Rosa ‘Zepherine Drouhin’ and Clematis 'Jackmanii' into a shady raised-bed garden room filled with hostas, ferns, astilbe, and potted tender tropicals. The path continues through a woodland garden planted with spring ephemerals, epimediums, ferns, hellebore, actaea, and more. Continuing out of the woodland, one passes a long hedgerow featuring conifers and deciduous shrubs underplanted with bulbs and perennials. Beds around the swimming pool showcase hydrangeas, smoke bush, witch hazel, pagoda dogwood, and many shade-loving perennials. Throughout the garden, there are clematis trained through the branches of deciduous shrubs. A small raised-bed garden beside the patio provides vegetables in season. This garden is a work in progress and a source of pleasure in all seasons."
