Dear Alumnus/Alumna,

It’s coming up for 100 years, exactly, since the end of “the war to end all wars.”  World War l turned out not to produce precisely that effect, but its resonance was widespread although still not generally understood.

A preeminent scholar who has analyzed the after-shocks of those four deadly years - years that reordered countries and cultures - Leverett Saltonstall Professor of History Charles S. Maier ’60, will discuss with us the importance of that war, in a talk entitled World War l, Origins and Consequences: The Continuing Debate.

We now invite alumni/ae and their guests to this thoughtful centenary commemoration of the 1918 Armistice, at the time it was signed in Paris: the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.  One hundred years on, we are privileged to share Prof. Maier’s account of the ramifications of the war for our current condition.

Please join us at 11 am on Sunday, November 11, first for a tour by the Curator of Arms of the West Point Museum.  At noon we will adjourn by foot or by car the few blocks to the Thayer Hotel’s Bradley Room (Please bring a photo ID; this is West Point) for their famously sumptuous Champagne brunch, followed by Prof. Maier’s talk and his answers to our questions.

Register online at Eventbrite or make checks payable to HRCHV.(or Harvard-Radcliffe Club of the Hudson Valley) and mail to William Collier ’57, 13 Gary Place, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.  Reservations must be received by November 5.  Email inquiries to harvard.radcliffe.club.hv@gmail.com.
